TWEEKLY # 9 " Vini Vidi Vici"

VINI VIDI VICI

Lily sighed again. She looked back in despair. She knew that this day would come but not this soon. She cried in despair and held her mothers hand, she slowly squeezed it.
‘Mama,’ she said ‘Daddy will heal right?’
‘ Of course he will.’ Her mom said trying to seem convincing, but her look gave it away. Lily turned towards her dad who was now laying sick on the clean, white hospital bed. An IV needle was implanted on his arm while an oxygen mask covered his mouth and nose.
Her memories flashed back to the wine colored days she used to live in happiness with her family.
‘Come here Lily!’ her dad would cry out ‘you know daddy is not going to be with you forever, when daddy leaves I want you to follow your dreams, remember Vini, Vidi, Vici. I want you to conquer the world for me, Lily. Can I keep that as a promise? ‘ he said as he held out his pinky.
‘I promise,’ I said in eagerness, not knowing hat he would leave me so soon.
Her memory was blurred when she heard her big brother knocking on the door.
‘Come in,’ her mother said.
‘ How’s dad?’ he asked.
‘ He’s doing well, the doctor said he will make it.’ Her mother said.
Lily wanted to know what her mother said was true, but… the chances of her father surviving were very slim. Her father was diagnosed with a very peculiar heart disease, which immobilized his heart of pumping blood. End results would be, that sooner or later her father would die.
She knew that she shouldn’t be so pessimistic but she really couldn’t help it. The ideal thing to do in this situation would be to be cheerful and optimistic for her father, but how could she possibly be that way when the truth was so obvious.
Suddenly ‘tiiiit, tiiiiiit, tiiiiiit,’ the heartbeat monitor beeped.
‘Lily come here,’ her father’s weak voice soared through the air.
‘Yes daddy!’ she said in excitement as she leaped towards her father.
‘Lily, remember Vini, Vidi, Vici,’ her father said as he held out his pinky.
‘Pinky promise daddy!’ Lily said as she intertwined her pinky with her father’s. Then the heartbeat monitor went blank and the intertwined pinky loosened, her father was dead. Instantly her mother cried in horror, followed by her brother.
Fast-forward 20 years later and its time for Lily to choose her major in college. She was unexceptionally intelligent student and so she had gotten a scholarship in one f the famous college in Indonesia, UGM or more commonly known as Universitas Gadjah Mada. Her expectations were to be able to take Art as her major. She had told her mother about his wish and her mother had agreed on this decision and now it was time to ask her brother. Ever since her father died her brother had taken over everything, he was now the leader of the family.
She knocked on the door to her brother’s bedroom.
‘Come in,’ said a loud, clear and deep booming voice, one she could clearly identify as her brothers.
She slowly opened the door, ‘this is it,’ she said to herself ‘either now or never,’ she whispered to calm herself.
‘What?’ her brother said to her.
‘I was just wondering, ummmm, you know that soon I’m going to go to college, I was just going to tell you that I wanted to take Art as my major?’ she said.
‘No! Absolutely not! Being an artist is not a promising job besides you are way too smart to be doing Art as your job,’ her brother said.
‘But, but, but,’ she said in disbelief that her brother had rejected her idea.
‘I suggest you to take business instead.’ Her brother said as he walked out the door. At the moment Lily knew that the decision for her had been made, she was going to have to take business or nothing at all.
She slammed her bedroom door and started to pack up in fury. She banged her closet door open and threw her clothing everywhere.  She threw all her toiletries everywhere. Then pulled on her hair and cried. She was depressed, sad and hopeless. Little did she know that her mother was looking at her through her window in sorrow, ‘be patient, my child.’ She said.
After a few hours of endless seeming tantrums she finally dozes of to sleep, out of exhaustion not relaxation. She seemed so calm it was almost as if she never even when through an emotional roller coaster.
The next day she woke up and straight away went to the bathroom. Just as she had guessed her face was pale and ill looking, but she didn’t care. She went to the bathroom then took a shower. After that she headed for the dining table. Her brother and mother already was sitting and waiting for her there. She glared at her brother, in fury and disgust. ‘This will be the last day I’ll ever see him’ she said. Finally her pick up bus came and she said her good bye to her mom. She slept on the way to the college.
When she woke up she sighed in boredom instead of smiling in delight. The next few college filled years went by quickly and she actually managed to set the record for the fastest graduate at an astounding 8 months. Soon offers from various different companies came to her, all were good. But none interested her, none made her leap out of her seat, none made her tingle in joy. Her heart longed for art, suddenly she got an idea. Why not just pay for an art degree in college herself, she could take one of the job offers and use the money she earned to get the college degree in art. That was exactly what she did. So she went off to a college which was famous for its Art degree and got a job in that city.
She graduated with honour and got her master degree, this time she did not long for anything more. Success then followed and she became a well renowned artist. She then remembered about her father who taught her to follow her dreams. Then off she went on a train to her father’s hometown where he was buried. She had brought a bouquet of roses and now she placed them on top of her father’s graveyard. She kneeled down then said ‘I did it daddy, I conquered the world!’
